The Paperbag Prince: In summer 1 Kestrel class will write a hybrid text in the form of a persuasive / information poster, selecting an appropriate audience and register. Use devices to build cohesion within a paragraph. Use modal verbs to indicate degrees of possibility.
Radiant Child: In summer 2 Kestrel class will write information text for a gallery. Use relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, when, whose, that or an omitted relative pronoun. Use adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility. Build cohesion in paragraphs and link ideas using tense choices.
Reading: Pathways to read:
The Last Wild and Pollution (Genre – contemporary fiction. Persuasion / information.)
African Tales (Genre – Fiction, books from other cultures and traditions.)
Spelling: Pathways to spell: Year 5 spelling - suffixes and word groups: -cious/-tious, -cial/-tial, -ant/ ance/-ancy, -ent/-ence/-ency, -able/-ible, -ably/-ibly, -fer, -ough, homophones, silent letters.
Maths: Measure: Kestrel class will carry on from last term, completing mathematical objectives related to calculating area and perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes and irregular shapes, and estimate volume.
Place Value /calculation: Kestrel class will then revisit place value and calculation, by solving number and practical problems, which also involve measure, fractions, properties of number, geometry, and calculation.
Geometry: Kestrel class will revisit Spring 1 and distinguish between regular and irregular polygons, and find the missing lengths and angles of rectangles. They will also be identifying, describing, and representing the position of shapes following reflection and translation.
Statistics: Kestrel class will solve comparison, sum, and difference problems, using information presented in a line graph. They will read and complete tables.
Fractions: Kestrels will solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal equivalents of ½, ¼, 1/5, 2/5 and fractions with a denominator of 10 or 25.
They will write percentages as a fraction, with denominator of 100and as a decimal.
Science: Living creatures and their habitats: Kestrels will learn about and describe the differences between the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects, and birds. They will also learn about and describe the process of reproduction in some plants and animals.
Fascinating forces: Kestrels will learn about and describe gravity, and identify the effects of air resistance, water, friction and resistance between moving surfaces.
Geography: Mountains: Describe and understand key features of mountains. (Leisure and entertainment in the 20th century.)
Volcanoes and earthquakes: Kestrels will describe and understand key aspects of physical geography, including volcanoes and earthquakes.
History: Local Study: Castlefields Kestrel class will study archives of people who lived in the local area before, go on a guided tour, and study the history of the Flaxmill.

MFL: Le planetes: Kestrels will be exploring the planets in French.
ICT: Programming A: Unit 5, Kestrels will learn about selection in physical computing. Exploring conditions and selection using a programmable microcontroller.
Programming B: Unit 6, Kestrels will learn about selection in quizzes. Exploring selection and coding in programming to design and code an interactive quiz.
Music: Dancing in the street Kestrels will be listening to and appraising Dancing in the street by Martha and the Vandellas. They will learn to sing and play the song and learn about rhythm and pitch. They will also find notes on glocks and recorders.
Art: Taking inspiration from great artists: developing and refining ideas, painting technique (brush strokes, colour mixing), collage, drawing and sketching.
RE: Understand Jewish beliefs and customs Kestrels will explore Jewish festivals and family life. They will learn about the importance of the Torah for Jewish people, and Identify and explain Jewish beliefs about God.
