The Paperbag Prince: In summer 1 Kestrel class will learn about the environment, landfill and recycling. They will write for a range of purposes and audiences. They will use a range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs (e.g. conjunctions; adverbials of time and place; pronouns; synonyms). They will use punctuation correctly, including commas for lists and to separate clauses; punctuation for parenthesis.
Radiant Child: In summer 2 Kestrel class will write information text for a gallery. Use relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, when, whose, that or an omitted relative pronoun. Use adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility. Build cohesion in paragraphs and link ideas using tense choices.

Maths:
Place Value /calculation: Kestrel class will then revisit place value and calculation, by solving number and practical problems, which also involve measure, fractions, properties of number, geometry, and calculation.
Geometry: Kestrel class will revisit Spring 1 and distinguish between regular and irregular polygons, and find the missing lengths and angles of rectangles. They will also be identifying, describing, and representing the position of shapes following reflection and translation.
Statistics: Kestrel class will solve comparison, sum, and difference problems, using information presented in a line graph. They will read and complete tables.
Fractions: Kestrels will solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal equivalents of ½, ¼, 1/5, 2/5 and fractions with a denominator of 10 or 25.
They will write percentages as a fraction, with denominator of 100 and as a decimal.
Science:
1, Changing materials:
- Know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution
- Demonstrate that dissolving mixing and changes of state are reversible
- Use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures can be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating.
- Explain some changes result in the formation of new materials – change is not reversible.
Geography:
Mountains: Describe and understand key features of mountains.
Volcanoes and earthquakes: Kestrels will describe and understand key aspects of physical geography, including volcanoes and earthquakes.

Local Study: Castlefields Kestrel class will study archives of people who lived in the local area before, go on a guided tour, and study the history of the Flaxmill.
MFL:
Going to the seaside: Kestrels will be exploring vocabulary used when going to the beach.
ICT:
Programming A: Unit 5, Kestrels will learn about selection in physical computing. Exploring conditions and selection using a programmable microcontroller.
Programming B: Unit 6, Kestrels will learn about selection in quizzes. Exploring selection and coding in programming to design and code an interactive quiz.
Music:
Dancing in the street Kestrels will be listening to and appraising Dancing in the street by Martha and the Vandellas. They will learn to sing and play the song and learn about rhythm and pitch. They will also find notes on glocks and recorders.
Art:
Monoprint
· Learn about different types of mark making, through looking at, and imitating, artist’s work.
· Use mark-making skills to create exciting monotypes, combining process, paintings, and collage.
· Explore how to use monotype to create their own personal zines.
Architectural design
· Explore how line, form, structure, material, and scale are used to make architecture interesting, and help the designer meet the design brief.
